The Art of Living Well: Creating Balance

In our quest to do it all, many of us often overlook one of the most crucial elements of a fulfilling life: balance. Not just the balance of work and home but a deeper, more internal sense of harmony that aligns with our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Balance isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential to our well-being, especially for us as women, who carry the weight of generational expectations, societal pressures, and systemic challenges.

The Body’s Natural Balance

Our bodies are designed to maintain balance through a process called homeostasis. For instance:

·    pH Levels: Our bodies carefully regulate pH levels to keep our systems functioning smoothly. When the pH is off, everything from energy levels to our organs' functions is affected.

·    Electrolytes: Have you ever felt dizzy or had muscle cramps after a challenging workout or stressful day? This might be due to an imbalance in electrolytes like potassium and chloride, which regulate nerve signals and hydration.

·    Heart Rate and Breathing: Our hearts and lungs aim for an optimal rate of beats and breaths per minute. When stress kicks in, it disrupts that rhythm, leaving us feeling exhausted or anxious.

These examples show how our bodies naturally work towards balance. But just like a pH imbalance can impact your entire body, emotional and mental imbalance can create chaos in your life.

Emotional Imbalance and Its Impact

When we don’t prioritize our emotional health, it doesn’t take long before our bodies tell us something’s wrong. Emotional imbalance can show up in several ways:

  • Mood Swings: One minute, you’re calm, and the next, you’re overwhelmed or angry. When life is out of balance, our emotions can swing wildly from one extreme to another, making it hard to find our footing.

  • Impulsive Reactions: Acting out of frustration or making decisions on the fly without thinking them through is a sign of emotional imbalance. We might later regret these actions but feel like we don’t have the tools to manage the moment differently.

  • Suppressed Emotions: Many of us were taught to keep going no matter what, to push through and stay strong. But suppressing emotions doesn’t make them disappear—it just bottles them up, waiting for the right moment to spill over.

  • Being Consumed by One Emotion: Ever felt stuck in a single feeling, like you’re drowning in sadness, anger, or fear? When you’re emotionally unbalanced, it’s easy to get consumed by just one emotion, affecting every other aspect of your life.

The Work-Fun Balance

The idea of “work-life balance” sounds nice, but let’s be real—it’s all life, even when we’re working. It’s about finding what feeds you and what drains you. I call it a “work-fun balance” because it’s more than just splitting your time between work and personal life. It’s about finding joy and fulfillment in every part of your life, including your career.

For a long time, I struggled with finding this balance. The scales tipped so far that my physical health suffered, and I was constantly exhausted and anxious. I later realized the root of my health issues wasn’t just physical but emotional. I was carrying unprocessed emotions and stress, all while pushing myself to be everything to everyone. It wasn’t until I addressed those emotional issues that I began to find my balance again.

A Holistic Approach to Balance

Creating balance isn’t about trying to achieve perfection. It’s about recognizing that all parts of you—your mind, body, emotions, finances, relationships, and spirit—are connected. Just as your heart and kidneys need different things to function well, each area of your life requires unique attention. Let’s break it down:

  • Physical Balance: Taking care of your body through movement, rest, and nourishment.

  • Emotional Balance: Honoring your feelings, expressing them in a healthy way, and feeling safe enough to be vulnerable.

  • Mental Balance: Shaping your mindset in a way that aligns with your values and goals.

  • Financial Balance: Making sure your finances support your dreams and well-being, not just survival.

  • Relational Balance: Building authentic connections that uplift and challenge you.

  • Spiritual Balance: Finding purpose and connection in something larger than yourself, whether through faith, mindfulness, or a sense of community.

We can’t compartmentalize our well-being; it all affects each other. Balance is about responding to your needs in each area and adjusting as life changes. As Black women, we recognize this interconnectedness as a radical act of self-love in a world where we were taught to put ourselves last.
